Murano Sommerso or Chinese oriental glass figure.
« on: July 10, 2014, 01:45:35 PM »
This is the third recent piece of this type of glass i have come across, i have a few of the faceted old Murano vases similar in style, i'm wondering in this is fellow is more Oriental  than Italian?. The base has no wear and is polished smooth, i think the depression in the base is the remains of the pontil.

The glass has lots of white inclusions and bubbles.

It's 9 inches in height and  3/4 inches across the base.

Regards Chris.

I would love to know how much that one went for John, it does look very similar.

I would suspect that the Onesto one might have been the inspiration of the one you have, Chris. There is something very oriental about it beyond the actual figure, in my opinion.

The overall shape of the Onesto one is far more elegant, there is something decidedly lumpy about yours.

I have seen absolutely stunning glass sculpture faces, based on ones designed by Picasso, going for £40 in TKMaxx not so long ago. I wouldn't have been able to tell them from the real thing. (If it were not for the price tag, the location and the Made in China sticker...)

I could well be wrong! ;D

Yes i can see what you mean, it was only a quid either way, i have been distraught when i have left something at a market, charity shop etc that i later find to be the real thing go back and it's gone, i just buy it now regardless, a lot of the deco glass from the 30's is being reproduced i quite fancy this one.

I was concerned about the bubbles and frit as well as the lumpiness, Chris.

My memory is failing me, I can't remember the names of the makers, (desmo? something-or-other-vogt?) but the '30s pressed pieces being reproduced now are being made from the original moulds. They were bought and are owned along with the copyright. (I believe)
They are very high quality, made using the correct kinds of glass,  (Malachite, Uranium, Neodynium etc. as well as ordinary colours.).  8)

Yes, Pamela, thank-you! :-* :)

I got muddled with Besmo, a contemporary African recycled glass place, and was having a very senior blond moment.... :-[
