Missing stopper
« on: August 02, 2014, 02:33:10 PM »
Hi again All

I have recently bought a Lalique Tuileries pattern decanter which is missing it's stopper. I would like to sell this on and am just wondering whether I should replace the stopper or not. I cannot find an original Lalique replacement but could source one (matched but not Lalique) from a specialist for £35&VAT or have one made for £100&VAT. What is your advice / feeling on this?

Many thanks
Val

Leave it up to your buyer to decide whether or not to get a stopper made, rather than go to the expense and trouble yourself. You might not recover the outlay!
You could provide the info about where to get it done, though.

Thank you for this too!  My thoughts exactly but, not having sold this type of glass before, I wanted to know what the market expectation may be. That's just what I'll do. Do you know how much the loss of the stopper may affect the price as it am feeling v unsure about the pricing?

The decanter is a later piece (1965-80, now discontinued).

Thanks again.

Not my area at all, sorry. I'm not fabulously wealthy. ;)

Fingers crossed Mike M will pop in and give an intelligent comment, but values are very subjective.
The missing stopper might have a fairly drastic effect on price, I would think Lalique collectors are in an "echelon" where they want perfection, don't care about the actual cost, as it means little to them.

I'm not a seller - just a collector of studio glass, but enthusiastic and learning about all other kinds of glass.
My opinion is not particularly good when it comes to old, expensive stuff.

Hi, did this actually have a stopper when made?  It has the appearance of a carafe and I can see no evidence from the image that there is grinding or polishing within the neck of the decanter/carafe.  Of course, that could just be my old eyes.

Thank you. With a bit of research I've found that this was a decanter, rather than carafe, and it does have a polished area (though I had to look quite hard) where a smooth stopper should sit. Still v attractive without it though.

Cool, I have a collection of old stoppers.  If you find out what type it takes and approximate size then let us know through the board and I'll see if I can find you one.

Wonderful - much appreciated.  I'll get back to you with some more info.  I've also just bought a job lot of stoppers that looked OK and am just waiting for those to come through in the post!

Hi my Lalique master catalog, say's Decant # 15291 Tuileries was in 1981 $335.00 US Dollars. Also had a pitcher with a handle and glasses. It had a plain round ball shaped stopper. Remember it  is 24% lead crystal and needs to fit the hole. It would take a pro to hand form it.

"echelon" ? That must be me. 85 pieces. 18 Rene Lalique and 67 Lalique, not too mention Pw's and art glass. Please help, LOL! I will try to scan the page later. Bob

Gave up on the scanner and took it out in the sun with my camera.  Any way here they are. Bob
