Pressed glass sweetmeat engraved with fern and something else?
« on: September 01, 2014, 03:47:39 PM »
Hi all, another from the weekend and something i have been known to walk past, this one however has  ferns  etched on it and a surprisingly nice ring,it's nearly 7" tall with a shed load of wear to the base and although the engraving has real charm, i can;'t imagine the Bohemian engravers were looking over their shoulders or losing any sleep over the chap who did this, especially the roses if that is what they are,but it works so perhaps i'm being unkind, got to be Victorian but any thoughts on a date, many thanks.

almost certainly a sugar, and not a sweetmeat, and date wise I'd suggest somewhere between 1860 and 1890, but difficult to be precise with these things.           As to origin  -  could be from anywhere in Europe.

Attractive and another example of Christine's Pteredomania.

Are you sure it's etched  -  normally this sort of decoration is wheel engraved, albeit crudely  -  but therein lies the charm - but a nice piece of working class history. :)

just noticed you do say engraved in the heading - so my comments out of place slightly, but notice the body does say etched, so worth just making the point that it is the former :)
