Are these vases Kralik, Loetz or something else?
« on: September 19, 2014, 09:49:26 AM »
Hi there,

I've a pair of matching vases, approx 18cm high - 2 images of them are file attached.

They were bought from a glass dealer who attributed them to Loetz. The silver top bands are very thin and hall marks are indistinguishable. There are no other markings. Colour is blue/iridescent purple

Can anyone help me attribute them to a manufacturer, identify the pattern and approximate date of manufacture?

.....from a novice who would like to collect more (if only he knew more about what to buy/avoid :)

Thanks in advance

I, for one, am not sure who these are by. They have a resemblance to the Martelé décor by Kralik and Rindskopf. The issue I have with them being one of those two, is that the Martelé decor by the companies I am familiar with is that the decor is generally a little tighter pattern. These have some very large clear areas in the decor and that just not fall in line with Kralik & Rindskopf Martelé examples I am familiar with.   In this case, the color is also a little different. I have seen a couple of examples of this décor recently, and on this shape if memory serves me correctly.

I  can say pretty confidently that they are not Loetz.

They are, at least for me, a bit of a puzzle at the moment.

May I inquire if the rims are Silver and Hallmarked?

Period wise these are likely ca 1910. Pretty examples in a different color......  and I love pairs...

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the helpful reply - if only to start ruling things out :)

Yes, both vases are hall-marked. The three squared marks on both vases are all worn through, although there is a bit of shape to them.

I've attached a photo which shows something to the left of the hollow squared marks that is partially readable on one of them; the other vase suggests that this is a single mark, although could contain more than one character.

Hope this helps.

Robin

Bohemian glass, with rims most likely added in the UK.  There were several silversmiths in London that did this.....  ordered glass and added silver rims.
