Huge 2 piece Art Deco centrepiece any ideas please?
« on: October 06, 2014, 07:24:36 PM »
Hello everyone
I have just bought this wonderful and very substantial centrepiece and wondered if anyone could shed some light please on who made it?
The bowl has a stylised scene of flying cranes and pond life and the flower frog is very thick and heavy and is a vase shape decorated with 6 different nude maidens with an urn pouring water. They are standing on a rock formation. It really is a wonderful piece and deserves identification.
Any input would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Nigel

Thanks Paul....I hope so.
All I can say about it is that base of the frog reminds me of the penguin flower frog by Libochovice?

I can't see it on the Libochovice pre 1958 Sklo Union CD - but what occurs to me is, are we looking at a correct pairing here?
The base of the vase is sitting directly on the surface of the bowl, which appears to allow no room for stems to project beneath the holes of the frog/support.
Also the moulded decoration of bowl and vase don't seem to share any design features.

Not really my thing, so I could be all at sea with my thoughts Nige :)

Hi Paul
I agree about the pairing I think if you look at black poppys site there is a similar frog with birds on in the misc section that would be a better pairing.
I sent the pic of my set to a collector in Holland and they told me they saw the same frog but in a large bowl with grapes and vines around the bowl....could that be the correct marriage?
I have never seen the sklo union cd so have no correspondence at all for Libochovice.

sorry Nige - regret I can't help specifically with this type of (probably) Continental pressed glass, as my areas of interest have diverged somewhat.      In the past I've spent many hours looking through Pamela's two magnificent picture libraries - don't know if you have done the same for this pair - always possible you might find them on one or the other.
I was really only making the comment that your pieces didn't quite look as though they belonged together  -  can only hope someone is able to give you a pointer. :)

Just found the bowl in a new book just out 'Pressed Glass Figural Flower Float Bowl Sets' by Neil Cooper ...it is referred to as the Water Bird set and your centre piece is not a match to the bowl, it has more of the same birds as the bowl but the shape is the same as yours. Maker not known....not a great help sorry  :)

Angela is correct, at least my bowl is the same as in Neil Cooper's book.

Anne E.B. donated a wonderful lady flower holder some time ago to my collection:

It might help to see more images of Nigel's bowl alone? And certainly of the vase, too? Does your bowl also have this deep basin in the center?

Hi Pamela
This is a pic of the bowl and a pic of the epergne.
Yes Pamela the bowl has that deep well too...the fet of the bowl reminded me of the Walther Pelikan bowl.

Excuse me what is a "fet of the bowl"?  :-\

The bowl was sold to me many years ago as 'Walther' but meanwhile I do also see interesting relations to Cambridge, Ohio EVERGLADES

The lady flower holder I received from Anne E.B. is faintly marked 'Czecoslovakia', my cranes bowl is definitely not marked at all.

Remains a mystery to me.
