Sabino fish ????
« on: November 13, 2014, 08:54:20 PM »
This fish is from a pattern like the Sabino Chabot  range its 4.750 long and 3.50 inches tall.
My concerns are the rough base e.g. not ground and no polishing. The other is the rough texture / finish to the body of the glass fish.
It does have the raised Sabino france mark on the side near the rear fin but I still have suspicion's its not the real thing when presented along side other Sabino glass.
Can you help
Many thanks

Definitely Sabino's Poisson Chabot, no. 5023 as shown in Decelle and older Sabino literature. The moulding and colour are spot on. The rough texture just looks like it's come from an older/ worn mould - this pattern's been in production for decades. The poor finishing on the base suggests that it may have left the works via the back door though.

Interestingly the finishing on Sabino can vary a great deal. Contemporary stuff is usually nicely finished. Their pre-war pieces can be too, but some are rather messy in terms of frosting and polishing. Not sure about their mid-century output however.

I recently picked up a nice pre-war example of this pattern in rauchtopas. It's one of the better finished pieces I've handled with all the edges/ fins cut and polished, giving a very sharp-edged look. This does make it rather prone to chipping though...

I do not know much about Sabino except very early pieces can feel like soap. Also on a glass club tour the host said several companies were making pieces for them.  Bob
