Appert Freres, Clichy
« on: December 16, 2014, 07:51:59 PM »
Does anyone have any records on the approximate dates that Appert Freres in Clichy, France produced small colored rods which I presume were used for lampworking? I have several and was interested when these may have been produced. The ones I have, have a label on them identifying them as this company. According to my research this comp[any was in business for over 100 years and made some of their own wares as well as glass for several other glass companies and decorators as well. Research shows they went out of business in 1947.

In 1878 they exhibited:

Colored glass, coated on both sides, with another color in the middle; the two outside coats engraved, thereby showing three colors.
Panels of glass mosaic, as samples of their enamels.
    Decorated Venetian glass ware.
Vases, painted, with the necks ornamented with colored beads.
Opal clock dial, with the hour-marks etched.
Imitations of various precious stones, cut in cameos and diamonds.
    Colored beads, plain and depolished.
Sheets of plated colored glass, as well as cylinders in all colors.
A fan of spun glass in several colors.
Etruscan vase colored with chrome green.
Two large dishes decorated with their Chinese white.
Enamels on cast and wrought iron.
    Chemical glass ware for laboratories.
White and colored chimneys for light-houses.
Rough-cast glass for deck-lights and lenticular apparatus.
Sheet-glass for spectacles and optical purposes, white, blue, neutral, or smoked, rose-colored, with gold-plated opal.
In 1907 they still used the same name and had an showroom in Paris. Also producing for lighting and colours for ceramics.

Nice find so that gives an end date of 1931 with a merged company SEVBA (Société d'exploitation des verreries de Bagneaux et Appert frères réunies) continuing to 1947 but in the Bagneaux works.

I 'guess' the items listed at the 1878 exhibition were made by other companies using Appert's materials. None of their adverts imply they made any end products other than components such as candle inserts.

One of the products mentioned in the French article was powders for Muslin Glass. I knew of Lobmeyrs so was intrigued what Appert produced. Found this account from 1878 if it was Appert or not, no idea.

And a modern version

I just came across this doing a search for something else in the Conservatoire National des Arts et Mêtiers online search engine:

My French is poor but it seems to be some kind of evidence of something to do with filigrana (?) glass maybe (that's if it translates from filigrané to filigrana?
