Recent acquisition - St. Mande?
« on: January 22, 2015, 11:33:44 PM »
The weight pictured below is a recent acquisition.  I am fairly certain that it is an antique and my ID is St. Mande based on the ring of blue spectacle canes.  I'm basing this on an early paper by George Kulles.  Is there newer information that points to a different attribution?  Thanks in advance.

The paperweight is just over 2 1/4" diameter by 1 1/3" high.

Hi Alan, definitely looks like a St mande to me. Has it got a small (in comparison to say a Clichy) wear ring? And does it have a shallow recess round the girth just above the level of the canes? And are the canes close to the surface of the dome.  If so I would have attributed it to St Mande. It looks fabulous, but I do have soft spot for them. Don

Hi Don,

To answer your questions, it does have a small wear ring.  No recess around the girth.  And the canes are low rather than high.  The paperweight may have been refinished.  Aside from the spectacle canes there is nothing that would have led me to conclude St. Mande.  It is quite well done.

Thanks,

Allan
