Vase ID Help - Monart ? Button Pontil Mark and Etched Signature
« on: February 06, 2015, 06:47:38 PM »
This vase has an applied finish over what appears to be a clear glass base.  I have never seen anything like this and can't find anything like it in my searches, except the pontil is like Monart.  Pictures are available via following:

Hi and welcome to the gmb. :)
There is a whole load of techie information about how to post images directly to the board here.
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/board,22.0.html

We'd really appreciate it if you could post the images directly here, because then we have permanent records of the piece in question, and all discussion that pertains to it. Images hosted elsewhere have a habit of vanishing, leaving us with discussion and hopefully a confirmed identity, but no image. :'(

Your bottle vase is not Monart. It appears to be signed (I can't read it, Formalhaut? perhaps, which might be French in origin and as you are in Canada, perhaps it might be a studio local to you?) and dated '88, which is far too late for Monart, it isn't a Monart shape or colourway.

My guts first thought was that it might be Will Shakespeare, (English artist) but the signature is not his.

I would think it is a studio piece, but we need somebody else to recognise it or the signature.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Hi Sue.  Sorry for the long delay responding, my internet has been down 4 days! :(  Thanks for the help, I have taken pictures with low resolution so I can load, here they are.

No worries, :)  hope you found life disconnected interesting.  ;D

There appears to be a logo impressed into the button over the pontil scar. Unfortunately, I don't recognise it at all.  ::)
If you rubbed a little talcum powder over the signature with your thumb, it would enhance it for photography.

Hi Sue.  Thanks for the Talcum tip, bought baby powder on my way home last night.  I suspect this vase is a small art glass studio, I would have said Sheridan College student (Sheridan College is Toronto premier glass college), if it wasn't for the mark on the button pontil.  Button pontil mark is U (or C) inside U.  Here is signature with Talcum.

Unfortunately, logos can often represent things they look absolutely nothing like.

Once you know what they're supposed to be it becomes clear, but not until.
Could you try emailing the college with pics to ask if they recognise it?
I'm afraid I know nothing about Canadian studio glass. eh. ::)
