Mdina Chinese bowl with characters....is it damaged ?
« on: February 10, 2015, 10:21:51 AM »
I bought this on ebay France , it's 4 inches tall and 5 inches (approx) in diameter. It has three Chinese characters applied . Where the trail of clear glass tapers to a point towards the base, on all three characters, the ends have been cut off or chipped off but at roughly the same point. Each end has a sharp edge. I think this might be damage , you can also see a faint line extending from the cut-off end where the trail of glass  continued....once  >:(   ??  Thanks for looking  :)   First photo taken with flash .

I'm afraid it is damaged - as are most of these bowls. There seems to be a serious weakness about the ends of those trails, finding a bowl with them intact is unusual.
All 4 of mine are damaged in this way, it's just something I put up with.

Oh well that is a shame , I remember I saw one of these bowls, years ago, in a charity shop , this was before I knew anything about Mdina. It too was damaged in the same way so I didn't buy it . Next to it , on the same shelf was a 'Zig-Zag' vase (page 39 Mark Hill's book) , I looked at that and thought ' someone learning to blow glass there...' ...so I didn't buy that either .....Ahhhhh !! :'(

I can live with the damage ...still looks good . Thanks for the info. Sue , it should help other buyers . Ta Mike.

It is a bit of a pain, but I can live with it. :)
It's better than not having one at all.

Yes they are lovely , I didn't pay too much for it but the postage costs bumped it up a bit , it was listed as pate de verre !

Everything in France is pate de verre if it doesn't obviously come from a factory

All of mine have also had the same minor loss to the end of (some or all) the trailed characters Mike, quite a job to find one which is completely perfect I would think!

It's common on lots of glass with such trailing offs. I have it on Victorian bits and on my Loetz chicken glasses
