Green overlay panel cut, clear stemmed glass for ID please
« on: February 17, 2015, 02:01:09 PM »
I have this green overlaid, panel cut glass I have been unable to determine the origin, maker and age of the glass.

I am asking here for some help, even if only nudged in the right direction, any help would be grateful. I have searched google, various websites, without success.

The glass bowl is in green with a clear glass facet cut stem, which has a tear drop bubble within.

The foot is plain, no pontil mark, concave towards the centre with a small bubble (looks like a bubble anyway) below the surface.

The glass is 12.6cm tall, top rim diameter is 6.6cm, foot diameter is 6.5cm

Thank you in advance.

hello.       I don't really think it makes a lot of difference to your request for information, but there may possibly be some confusion here as to your use of the word 'overlay' in the description.

Is the bowl simply solid green glass  -  is the green overlaid with clear glass  -  or might clear glass be overlaid with green - this last perhaps being a more usual use of the word overlay.

Regret I can't offer any help other than to suggest that judging by your description of the foot, then date wise this is probably from somewhere around the middle third of the C20, perhaps earlier depending on wear.
C19 greens were generally unlike this one  -  they were more often some sort of peacock bluey/greens.
You don't mention if there is any wear to the foot, which could possibly help a little with dating  -  does it ring well when flicked?
also not sure where you are on the globe.

sorry this is rather unhelpful.

Thanks Paul for your reply, to answer your questions:

It looks like clear glass overlaid with green,

There are light, a few heavy surface scratches / wear on the edges of the foot, some lighter scratches going inwards to the centre.

The glass does ring well when flicked.

I am from the UK.

I suggest the green is on the inside, which is why the cutting doesn't go through it, see second picture and that they are relatively modern English. Modernish from the colour and English from the fact that 12.6 cm = 5 in

Thank you, it gives me something to go on with searching for additional information on this glass, out of curiosity.

Thank you Anne, they are very similar, if not exactly the same, albeit the colour variation.
I wonder if they did make them in green, something to look for anyway, thank you again.

It doesn't mention any colour in this particular catalogue that I have... just a design of the service 'Paul 1er' (premier) registered in 1946...but it doesn't mention anything either on other services that are well known to be available in several colours... this specific colour green is called at VSL 'vert de Chine' - China Green... if you google Val St Lambert vert de Chine you'll see what i mean.

Googled as suggested, yes, I do see what you mean. This glass is more like the second link you provided for "Paul 1er", I will do some more digging over the weekend and see if I can find any others in this colour.

Thank you for your knowledge and assistance.

Here's the page from the catalogue, and as you can see, nothing's mentioned about colour, but again, it isn't on any model in this book.
