« on: April 24, 2015, 09:08:29 AM »
Here i have managed to put together a collection of mainly black glass plinths or stands for display of various items i like them for vase's etc, I started picking them up a few  years ago for a £ never more than £2 or i dont buy them i have around 50 now and wondered if anybody else collects them i know very little about them regards rarities etc? I have one or two which are amethyst and cobalt blue base colour not the usual black are there any other colours? And are there any to keep my eyes open for!! I have been thinking of selling the lot but when all laid out on the table they look great hahaha so back in the boxes i think and keep going with the collection thanks for looking..

I like plinths. I put them under all sorts of things that do not match. I don't think it matters, they raise a piece of glass nicely from the shelf.
For example, I have a green Davidson cloud glass plinth under a red Sam Herman vase.

That's probably quite a valuable collection, especially some of the more unusual ones. You will find that none of them are actually black but very dark purple or occasionally green or brown, but it's very hard to spot unless you can persuade enough light to pass though them. Plinths also come in various "cloud" colours and green uranium, frosted and not. I too use most of mine

Just imagine you dropped the plinth to your centre piece - where would you go for a replacement?

I would keep them for all the reasons already given.
Also you will see that they are getting more pricey on the auction sites now. Although there are still a few for the price you mention,  most have risen well above that, especially if they are Art Deco in style.

I have bought quite a few plinths cheaply which people think are ashtrays and are upside down, I have a box full in the roof waiting for nice things to go with them! I also have a load of flower frogs also waiting in the roof. I find a lot of people on the car boots don't realise what they are for and are glad to get rid of them. Didn't realise how much stuff I had squirreled away in the roof until it all had to come down to increase the loft insulation. :o  I think maybe we all have a touch of madness!     cheryl

Actually I picked one up just a month ago because I had never seen a U.S. one that was square based & yes the bottom is solid.
