Glass "Knot" sculpture , IoWSG or Mdina ?
« on: July 15, 2015, 11:09:18 AM »
I recently bought this on ebay thinking it was Mdina but having examined it I think it has a decidedly  IoWSG look to the colourway.

It's only 6 inches tall. The brown streaks don't have the usual silver chloride seed-type bubbles , all the bubbles are in the clear glass.

These sculptures were produced at IoWSG ....see this previous thread.........

Thanks for having a look  :D

My guts are on Mdina for this. IoWSG didn't make many sculptures at all, and I believe the ones they did make were all massive. In that old thread I'm just quoting from Lesley Jackson's 20th Century Glass.

Your beast has loads of features I'd associate with small Mdina sculptures - the seedy bubbles, the flattened clear parts, the looping at the base, and a sort of general random structure that doesn't quite make it as being abstract art. (not in my opinion anyway, it's just trailing about for the sake of trailing about, if you see what I mean. :-[ :) )

Mdina did make loads of these small sculpture things. They sold well, and like pwts, were easy for tourists to carry home.

Thanks very much Sue,

Did Mdina ever stop making these ? I would be very interested to see an example of an IoWSG one if anyone has one to show  :)

Cheers, Mike

I don't know if Mdina ever did stop them, no.
The only IoWSG ones I've ever seen were on Ron Wheeler's Artius glass website, many years ago, when he had them for sale.

Having been rude about the artistry of yours, I have to say, I've seen much worse. 8)

It's kind of interesting, if not great art.  ;D

Knots can probably be described as rare from IoW and I think usually bigger and a bit more complex than those from Mdina.

I dislike using the r word even more than the dreaded d word. ;D

I seem to remember a very large, vaguely triangular, blob of something blue and pink, and I can't remember if it was made by Michael or Tim Harris.
It had more colour - but the structure was a lot less "complicated" than this Heath Robinson style knot.
(which is growing on me, the more I see it. ;) )

Well,  now I know who outbid me...MIKE!!   :(
I think it is glorious and would have been very happy to own it and display it.
But at least I know it has gone to an appreciative home.  ;)

Sue , how long did Heath Robinson work at Mdina ?......only jesting  ;D  Glad it's growing on you, I bought it because of the colour, nice to see one that isn't blue ! Still looking for a large one with amethyst included....but they tend to be highly priced/prized .

Cheers, Mike
