ID hep for large vintage glass bird?
« on: July 26, 2015, 03:11:00 AM »
To me it looks like a vintage Murano bird..or maybe just a sculpture. Stands 10x11x4 inches and just shy of 8Lbs( 25x28x10 cm and 3.6kg). Hoping someone here may have seen something like this.

So heavy, is it solid or hollow? It does look like an abstract bird.

I believe the technique for this style of glass is 'Incalmo' where block colours are fused together.
The pieces must be exactly the same size, consequently, this is a technically complex technique, demanding great precision and, with this weight of glass, is also physically demanding.
So if it is Incalmo,  it is likely to be from a specialist glass studio, with skilled glass artists, and my thoughts were, on first seeing this lovely bird /sculpture, that it could possibly be Venini or Fratelli Toso from Murano.

I thought incalmo too but I have no idea if the term would apply with a solid object as it would if blown.

Very similar form, I would hope the attribution is accurate: https://www.antiquehelper.com/item/326361

Yes, they are certainly a very similar shape and form, aren't they.  A great reference, glassobsessed.
I agree they are Sommerso, as described,  where the colours melt into each other, even though some appear to be blocks of colour from some angles.  The whole is clear cased.
If the attribution is correct and they are Salviati, then this is perhaps where we should be looking to help get a definitive attribution for Alton11's bird.

I hope I am correct in my thinking it is Incalmo... I am doing some further research and will report back. :)

If you have the time Rosie there is some fabulous glass in that auction, I spent half an hour last night just clicking through the lots. Some fantastic animals dotted throughout too.
