Vase with engraved dragon passant--any ideas?
« on: July 28, 2015, 02:37:54 PM »
Vase smoke/grey clear.
16.5 cms high, thick walls ,1500 gms weight.
Deeply wheel engraved image of what looks like a dragon or some mythical creature !
There's quite a lot of base wear which may suggest 60s/70s?
Any ideas re it's origin appreciated ,thanks
Scott

Can we see the botom please? It might be a Leerdam piece from 1948 but need to see the bottom, and would need to check my reference books - which are not with me At the mosment.

Nice finish but not the one I'd ecpect from Leerdam which would have a smaller pontil mark plus a polshed stand ring.  So I cannot confirm at this point. Sweden jumps to mind, as does Germany.

Hi--most of the stand ring is as finely polished as the main body of the vase, it's inner circle however has an almost mat finish as a result of usage.
The concave inner bit is polished, with no sign of any pontil mark.
I apologise for the quality of my photos.
I have to say Sweden crossed my mind, as did China.

Just for clarification, the pontil mark is the polished out concave circle; the outside of the piece is smooth from blowing, not from polishing.

I'll get right in the end, pontil mark certainly sounds better than " the bit in the middle" !
Leerdam pontil marks do seem smaller than this one.
