ID help please Amber hobnail square vase
« on: August 03, 2015, 11:48:12 AM »
I bought this thinking possibly Czech and but can't find anywhere. I then had a hazy memory of something similar being ID'd as French, although I may have just imagined that. Hoping that someone may recognise, any thoughts or suggestions appreciated, John

I am quite sure the vase is Oberglas, Austria.
Here is an ashtray (in original box), same colour and pattern >> https://cache.willhaben.at/mmo/9/128/678/719_-1406215291.jpg

I have now seen several round vases in very similar pattern attributed to Jiri Zejmon for Rosice. Anybody else think this could be Sklo Union?

The base is more like the SU ones - the Oberglas (round) ones I've seen that are similar have a star base. Frank has a reference page of Zejmon designs here - they show the bases, for comparison: LINK

Sorry, I have to disagree ;)

Sklo Union pieces have a ground and polished (slightly matte) base, whereas the vase in question seems to have a moulded base, which is common in Oberglas pieces (and not all Oberglas pieces have star-cut bases) >> Link

Besides that, Sklo Union glass is quite well documented, so there should be a reference somewhere to be found...
IMHO, a vague similarity to some Zejmon designs is not enough for attribution, the Oberglas ashtray I linked to above is a far better match for the pattern.

This design is commonly seen here in Vienna, and I am sure I have seen it with an Oberglas label.
