This paperweight is about 2 3/4 inches tall. Has a 'battuo' (i.e. uneven grove-type marks) base with a slightly matt finish , with red , green and yellow included in the mix. Plus a grid type of pattern. Thanks for looking, Cheers, Mike.

Hi Mike,

A great paperweight and I think you are spot on with the MDG connection.

Same colour as this 'Tiger Bottle Vase'

Earthtones, not Tiger, but yes, both are MDG.
Silver nitrate was used to turn red glass into brown, if there was not a lot used on the strapping during the making, some reds remain.

The bubbly yellow-greeny background was also created using silver salts (I don't know if they used nitrate or chloride) the colours which appear depend on the concentration of silver and the heat of the glass.

Nice one. The green is just an artefact of colour mixing though

Thanks Sue and Christine for explaining the green and red colouring.

I was very pleased to find this, wouldn't have known what I was looking at if it wasn't for all I have learnt here on the GMB.

Thanks all, Mike  ;)

It's thanks to the GMB and the generosity of the stalwarts here, that I know most of what I know about glass - and for finding some of my very closest friends.
My life would be very different and very much poorer without it.

It's quite a horrible thought actually  :o - how completely different it would have been without it.

It's a wonderful community  :) I'm always so amazed by the level of understanding and knowledge ( & friendly encouragement) that I have experienced here !

I just wanted to add a profile shot of the paperweight, as the other photos look as if the weight might be more spherical than it's true shape.
It also gives a better indication of the gird type of pattern which seems a common trait with this 'Mdina style' of MDG earthtones. (taken with flash) . The 'battuto' effect is all over the base area, not just at the edges, and can be seen if angled with the light at the optimum position. The base looks quite shinny at first glance. The base shot hasn't picked-up this effect as it's very difficult to photograph. :(
