Diameter would normally be measured from outside to outside.

It would not be impossible for it to be an unusual variation, the other question I have is the profile of the 'dents', they don't look to be the same but appearance can vary according to the angle any photo is taken from.

From the side they look more like a gently rounded v than a shallow c if that makes any sense. Also the photograph makes the top section look a little longer than the bottom section (up to the clear part) where in fact they are about the same length.

Have you seen a Riihimaki one with the same profile? I couldn't find one, although I did find plenty with similar grooves.

Not Riihimaki (that I know about anyway), another possibility could be a German maker.
