Walther Windsor Vase?
« on: June 29, 2006, 11:09:26 PM »
I know that Walther made the Windsor vase (along with matching clocks etc) and I have a pink Windsor vase that is transparent pink glass in the vase with two satinized lady figurals on each side. The vase stands 8 1/2" tall and is 10 3/4" x 7" across the rim and 7" x 4" across the base. I have had blue and green vases like this in the past, always with satinized ladies

here it is for reference

Recently I found a somewhat differently shaped vase, also shorter, and ALL transparent glass, including the lady figurals. The vase stands 8 inches tall and is 11 x 8 inches across the flared rim and 7 x 4 inches across the base.

here it is

My question is whether Walther made an all transparent version of the Windsor vase and with this different flared rim and smaller size?
 :?:

I have checked Pamela's site and dont see this one represented there

Thanks for any help anyone can provide to correctly ID this

Hi,

I have been told (cannot remember the source) that the transparent ones are modern reproductions.

Has any one else heard this?

Regards

Have you seen this thread? http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5800.0.html
It may be of some help, but probably only adds to the confusion!

Thanks Leni

yes, I had seen that thread, but, if I read it correctly (and there is always the chance I havent) I still think that the ladies should be matt, while the rest of the vase clear...like in my first example.

The main reason that I brought this up is that I had listed the second vase as Walther and received an email telling me it was a repro. However, when I replied and asked the person to elaborate on why they felt so sure, I received no further answer

Here is Siegmar Geisselberger's page on the reproduction - but you might need Pamela to translate (correction - I need Pamela to translate :)

I *think* it means a reproduction made by VEB Sachsenglas between 1948-1965, and that the quality was much worse. ???? Just fooling around before the experts get here.

thanks so much for that link Cathy!  :) That is just what i was looking for.!

Hopefully Pamela will be along to do some full translating    but in the meantime at least i can see that it is not an original Walther, and also that is was not made by Sarsaparilla Deco Designs,(SDD) as the person had told me

(and yes, on close examination, the workmanship and glass quality in the repro is nowhere near that of the genuine Walther!)

Dear Cheri and all!
Please excuse for joining you only now in this thread - we had a soccer evening and goodbyed our daughter leaving for Shanghai tomorrow for two or three years of work there at the same time.

Cheri, it is sad that you do not hold the orignal in hand to see the difference between a possible fake and an original. I come back to this further at the bottom.
Perhaps you have noticed  that I have got that flat shaped too

http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/00657.html

the shape is not the problem I think  8)

what bothers me more is the quality of glass...

I think I do not have to translate much of SG's article here, just let me point out, what is also written in his Korrespondenz:

VEB Sachsenglas is the follower of Walther after war - same place, same people, same moulds

GDR would not have given order to produce their moulds elsewhere, it was GDR who needed the foreign exchange for own production, why produce in France then?

The glasswork in France named producing the icebear is unknown to us

And now I return to the top: if you had both vases in front of you, you perhaps and most certainly could judge whether the shiny one is fake.
I've got the Hollaenderin more than twice, but I strongly believe THIS one is a fake:
http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/00666.html

there are differences in the proportions in a 'my'-scale and I guess this one was made after a (help please!   ) 'redone' mould
I can see it only if I place this one next to her:
http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/tafelaufsaetze/00644.html

The thread LENI was so kind to add was more on the surfaces, whether pink glass or coated or what else - IVO did a great job in translating what Mr. Mauerhoff wrote on that - thank you again for that!

Dear Cheri, I shall never dare to judge from your photo, but to me it maybe could be  :?  a newly made in Malaysia or somewhere else

Cheri, now that I've re-read this thread: WHO told you it's a repro - can we perhaps try to communicate further?
Thank you
Pamela

Hi Pamela:)

I got the email in from someone who had seen it in my eBay listing. I do not know them. They said it was SDD (Sarsaparillo Deco Designs) who I am always careful to avoid, but usually their pieces have SDD impressed on them.

I bought this from someone in Canada, and, apart from shipping, did not pay what I normally would for a Walther. Guess that should have been a clue  When it arrived, I said to my husband that it looks so different from the other Walther Windsor that we thought maybe it was a "made for export" or  less expensive version.

here is an enlargement to show you more of the glass.
