Uranium glass trumpet Straw Opal - Powell?
« on: November 24, 2015, 08:12:13 PM »
Can anyone tell me anything about this uranium glass trumpet please?

It reminds me of some Powell glass, but were friggers ever made in straw opal?  It has a strong green glow under UV.

Straw Opal is a term that was used by James Powell & Sons for their opalescent glass. The way that the colour is laid into this trumpet suggests that it is not by them I'm afraid.

Since I've only ever had one glass trumpet (in opaque white) I don't feel I can comment further I'm afraid.

Cheers, Nigel

Thanks for your comment Nigel.  Can you give me any idea on the age of this piece?

These sorts of things are generally late 19th/early 20th C. I would suggest that this is genuinely an apprentice piece but a fair number of British companies made this opalescent uranium glass
