Hello all,
I found the pictured decanter in a junk shop yesterday and am curious about it's origin and age. I have been reading the forum and hope I include some useful info!
It is 9" tall and 4" in diameter and holds a standard bottle of wine, just! It weighs about 1200gm. My initial impression was that the stopper was not the original: It is much shinier than the decanter and doesn't fit terribly well but there is a tiny 3 etched into the lip of the decanter and on the stopper. The stopper has a large bubble in it.
There are numerous tiny nibbles on the facet edges and quite a lot of scratches on the base and inside the decanter. The base has a polished hollow which isn't exactly round or even quite central and the ground outer ring isn't completely flat, it's more like two concentric rings with a very shallow depression between them. The three rings around the neck were added, you can see a bit of a lump where the first bit of each ring was attached.
I would be very grateful for any pointers, I can't decide if the slightly 'rustic' feel to this item is a sign of great age or great cheapness!
Thanks.
