Topic: Sam Herman / Rosenthal Vase

I picked this up last year from someone who had worked for Rosenthal - a very thick-walled vase with an opal core, a layer of clear, applications of light blue and silver nitrate, and cased in another layer of clear. The clear layer between opal and blue gives the vase a subtle 3D effect.

It's marked to the base with acid-etched Rosenthal Studio Linie and facsimile Samuel Herman signature, and engraved pattern number 20427, an unfinished edition number /200 and the word 'muster' - presumably because this would/could have been the archetypal vase subsequent vases were made from.

The person I bought it from thought it was from about 1980, the bits of the internet where Herman/Rosenthal vases pop up claim mid-1970s.

Might anyone have a firmer idea?

'Samuel Herman is a glass artist. He likes to work and experiment with the material glass. His one-of-a-kind pieces speak of new techiques and all his works are strongly characterised by solid craftsmanship.

Herman has been working for Rosenthal since 1973. He has created ten one- of-a-kind glass vases.'

It doesn't say any more about designs but does indicate he had worked with them from 1973 if that helps.

And that thick clear base reminds me of two pieces of  Czech glass I own dating to 60s to early 70s along with the use of the opal. Again not sure if that helps but it is a 'style' that was used in that period.

Sam Herman was the original Director of the Glass studio at The Jam Factory in Adelaide, South Australia from 1974 to 1977.  He subsequently stayed in Adelaide for aboout two years leaving at some time in 1979.

You might be interested in my vase which is very substantial, but quite typical of his work in 1976 when it was made.
