purple oversize brandy balloon
« on: April 21, 2016, 11:01:39 AM »
there is a little monster inside of me that tells me to pick up things I have no idea about and once again I have .
This is a very deep purple
It is smooth on the outside, but rippled on the inside .
The gold decoration is raised.
The stem and base are purple.
It stands 24cm high.
I think it was hand made.
The pontil is swirley?
Thanks in advance from down under.

I would suspect a generic '70s, (possibly Empoli) glass, which has been decorated at home by the owner, using cold glass laquer you can buy in tubes.

as the inside is slightly ribbed but smooth on the outside, I'd suggest the gather was started in a dip-mould - moulded for pattern only - and then expanded by free-blowing  -  doubtless decorative only   ..................sorry, no clue as to its origin  -  bet it would hold a lot of brandy.

Every glassworks in the last 50 years seem to have make at least one brandy glass, they are tough to attribute without a label.

Sorry I sounded so negative, Paul is right to point out the optic moulding, a distinctive feature that many will lack.

To lift the paint try using nail varnish remover, if that does not work paint stripper can be chemically very persuasive.

thank you so much. Honesty is honesty and I have no issue with it. I am relieved the lacquer is rubbish and am getting it off as we speak.  However as I had no idea about moulds and stuff as always i look it up and your kidding. I love it even more. making that isnt like baking bread.  :D

Failing nail polish remover and paint stripper, a bit of warm water and gentle, sideways-nearly-parallel to the glass scraping with a razor blade should get the laquer off.
It's quite a satisfying sort of thing to do. ;)
Back in the '70s when these were popular, Beswick made dangly siamese cats to hang on the rims, with a little mouse to sit inside the glass. The mice nearly always seem to be missing, this glass would hide the lack of mouse! I have a spare (mouseless) cat if you'd like it.
