Topic: opal grade to yellow strangeness

Strange beast. Fiery opal glass, grading to yellow at the top, tons of wear and a rough little pontil mark. Found here in Edinburgh, so probably from the main island.The foot is blown, then taken over on the pontil to finish the yellow spray <?> colour grading and the trilobe edge. It would make a fine lamp shade too, if it had no bottom.

Anyone familiar with this?

sorry not a clue - I could be very wrong, but looks like I'm seeing a circular pontil scar i.e. from a hollow rod  -  though if that is the case, might it suggest this is Continental manufacture or elsewhere, and perhaps not British?

It is a pontil mark, not a blowpipe mark.

Ivo, I hate to be picky    but could you enlarge your photos please adding them one by one and as 600 x 400 pixels?
That way they can be enlarged enough to see the detail (not that I have a clue though - sorry)

It looks to me as though it is white glass, then a yellow glass gather over the top, then cased in clear?

You have no idea how  much trouble I had in transferring the pix from my phone to the laptop, and getting the resizer to work. 600x400 is too large, it had to be 300x400 to stay within the limits. But I will see if I can work magic.

I am not convinced of a clear casing and I don't see how a graded colour can be applied to the blowpipe part of a piece - the underside being shaped in a turning mould and the top being finished on a pontil rod.... Oh well, lets see..

mm, ok.  I can see what you mean.  It's just that when I enlarged the pic it didn't look sprayed on to me.

If it is would that date it maybe to 1930s or something?  it's an odd shape for a 1930s vase though.

Have you checked it under UV/ I would guess Bohemian and say it's not sprayed
