Topic: Is This Perthshire PP6 or PP1? ID = PP2. pre-1978

Hi,
Is this Perthshire PP6 or PP1? It is 2 1/2" diameter, label on the bottom but no date or letter cane.
I looked in The Complete Guide to Perthshire Paperweights, and still not sure. This has 13 radial twists separating cane groups of 1-1-2-2-.
Any information appreciated.

PP1 or PP6?

First of all, checking the back of the book for sizes ... page 166 ... 2 1/2 inch = Medium; Large is 3 inch. Now go back to the PP6 detail on page 82 where it says 1969- 1971 was Medium size and 1972 - 1977 was Large size. So, at 2 1/2 inch, it might be PP6 1969 to 1971, but for those, a star cut base was used. Your weight does not have a start cut base, so it is not the earlier ones of PP6.

That rules out out any form of PP6, without even considering colour of the ground or the lack of a central "P" cane. So it's a PP1 - and the lack of a "P" cane means it is pre-1978.

Thank-you for your detailed answer Kevin! I was back and forth as the book says the PP1 was a large miilefiori weight and then as you say the PP6 had a star cut base - so I'm glad to know what it is
So much to learn with paperweights - this message board and your folks are a real saving grace for me!

Oops! I got it wrong. I did not take the analysis far enough.

As you say, the PP1 was a "large" weight (3 inch). Since yours is Medium (2 1/2 inch) and not a PP6, it must be a PP2; but like the PP1 designs it is also pre-1978 because of the lack of a signature cane.

The book shows that there were a variety of designs for many of the "PP" numbers. Although in the book a 1-1-2-2 design is not stated or illustrated for the PP2 versions, it was, I assume, one of the variations. Unless, of course, it is a Medium sized PP1 ... which is not covered in the book.
