Hi all,

Another one of my enigmas, well to me anyhow. I was really hoping someone would have an idea as to who made this.
It weighs 1.8kg, 250mm in height, with an opening of 170mm x 100mm.
Beautifully polished pontil scar and lots of wear to outer base rim.
It is virtually see through near the bottom of the vase & contrary to the pictures, the top is not blue (I don't think  ::) ), it is the purple inner.
A quality item.
Any suggestions greatly accepted  8)

TIA
Della

beautiful vase and beautifully made :)

It looks like deep amethyst glass cased in some form of opalescent glass.

No idea of maker but looks very Italian and sophisticated/classy (although perhaps the  pontil mark might contra-indicate Italian).

Dutch/ Scandinavian?

edit - oops - I've just read the title and it says Murano.  Apologies  :-[

I should have added a ? to the Murano bit, M, as I don't have a clue. It is indeed a deep amethyst, like a really good red wine, which gradually disappears and the opalescent glass is on its own.
I am open to all suggestions with regards country of manufacture.
Classy? I like that :) I think so too, thank you!

I was thinking Scandinavian because didn't Bjorn Wiinblad make a face vase in that shape? That's what I think it reminds me of.
It's beautiful Della.

No idea why this has popped into my head but have you checked out Steuben?
I guess that would be signed though  :-\
But just a thought.

No, I haven't, M, but I will, thanks.
I can't see a signature.

They did a colour called plum and it reminded me of that.
There is a site (I think called Carder Steuben ) where you can put in 'vase' and all their pieces /shapes come up.
It's a fabulous resource.

Della could you add a close clear picture of the white over the plum colour please?  I'm curious to know if it has any little white specks in it which should show up if the photo is of the outside part over the darker colour.
The pontil mark is very large or appears so? (I'm secretly wondering if it is a Stevens and Williams piece) :-[

My first thought was Murano as well.
Fratelli Toso produced similar pieces (Leslie Pina shows a few in her book) -- aubergine thickly cased in opalescent glass. Here is a basket on ebay >> http://www.ebay.com/itm/222221772678
I have this bowl, which is quite similar, too. Has a flat polished base, though...
