Topic: Uranium, frosted, moulded bowl / dish. ID help.

Hi, struggling---as before any help greatly appreciated 

Pale yellow/green with a folded over rim.
The underside moulded- four mould seams.

To me the dish has an Art Deco look about it.

The inside centre is raised.

It looks as though it's been used as a bowl.
Diam -26.5 cms (10.5")
Ht - 5cms ( 2")
Wt - just over 1kg

Hi, it's a Czech bowl by Schweig Muller & co.   can have a lady in the centre, I have a blue one which I keep my make up in on my dressing table!!!     Cheryl

Definitely a centerpiece bowl but I'm not sure about the Schweig Muller attribution -- it's often referred to as Muller online but I'm not aware of any evidence for this. The pattern is shown in one of the Markhbeinn catalogues (available from Pressglas-korrespondenz.de) which suggests it is likely Czech in origin.

Hi Steven, I got the attribution from the 20th Century glass website. The trouble with things that are wrong on such sites is that people like me pass this on as a fact. Lots of people use the same sites for reference.    Oh it's all so confusing!!!!!       Cheryl

Hi, many thanks for your replies - so a Schweig Muller ( possible) Czech ( probable) piece.

It did cross my mind that it might have originally come with a " centre piece " however as this bowl's centre is slightly raised do you think this would have been likely?

Anyway, I'll be using mine as yet another "bits and pieces" dish - can't seem to have too many of them !!

Black Poppy has it as Schweig Muller, Miller guide has it as just Czechoslovakian, they say it was made it no less than 12 colours!!!!!   With black being the rarest. Think we can say for sure it's Czech even if the maker is a bit unsure.  I know some info in Millers is wrong occasionally. It's a nice bowl whoever made it.    Cheryl

Hi, yes, it's quite an impressive centrepiece bowl - especially when it's lit up by a UV torch !

Although its centre is raised and there isn't a restraining central ring, I think originally it probably would have had a 'lady'.
The chance of finding a matching one ( in yellow/green uranium) must be pretty remote; more so as it probably pre-dates ( my gut feeling ! ) most of the other similar bowls I've seen online.

Anyway, thank you both for your input- much appreciated. I now know a lot more about it than I did !

It's listed as number 2317. Several other pieces on the page are Czech, mostly from Inwald or Feigl & Morawetz, Libochovice. I also spotted a Reich vase elsewhere in the catalogue. Interestingly Markhbeinn appear to have used the original manufacturer's catalogue numbers rather than their own system, at least in the case of the Inwald and Reich patterns they offered.

Hi, thank you so much for sending the link- I found it really interesting.
Now I know exactly what I'll be spending the rest of my life searching for !!

I thought it may have come from the 1930s - as it looks very Art Deco --even without the statue.
It was interesting see the prices being quoted for the different pieces.
Presumably uranium was used to get the absinthe colour - I hope it's safe 

It's amazing what you can find on the internet - if you know where to look of course !
