Christmas treats from Germany?
« on: December 11, 2016, 11:56:00 PM »
I have decorated the tree :)
When I was a child the decorations we had were all silvered antique glass decs from my grandparents. Those were all lost in unfortunate circumstances.  But our decorations have likewise been collected over many years and each year I add to them and use the same ones every year.

This year one of my children is living in Germany, so I had been hoping to be given a couple of decorations from there to add to our memories.
However as it turns out, in complete innocence, I seem to have bought two 'vintage' Lauscha decorations anyway (not sure how old but judging by this link they may be quite old?) .  I was particularly pleased that the Santa Claus does not have a red coat.

It appears from this link on ebay that the Santa Claus might be 1930s perhaps?

I also bought a lovely gold lined mercury glass goblet with engraved birds and vines on it and with glass disc intact in the base.  I think this might also be German but perhaps Bohemian?  (btw it is not discoloured at all, that pinkish colour on the silver around the picture is just reflection)

pics below including one of the tree - and wishing a peaceful Christmas to all.

Maybe not that old, as we had those on the tree when I was a child. And I don't think they were old then. They also look in remarkably good condition; my Mum's didn't last that well, and I don't mean in the broken sense (we only just threw them out as they weren't good enough to keep)

 :)
Like Christine, I can remember those from my childhood too, so they're at least 53 years old, if I was 6 then, which would be about right.
Coal fires, no central heating or double glazing. Lucky to have a black and white tv to watch the (rather creepy and violent) cartoon of "The Snow Queen".

And like you, I upgrade my decorations from finds, but I'm collecting lovely Polish ones.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Yes, they were made for a very long time and I think still are by a few companies still in Lauscha from what I read. Santa cost me quite a lot as he's in perfect condition.
I think the reflector bauble is more recent than him as it's glittered - that was about 20p though and is in almost perfect condition with just a few glittery bits missing near the tie.

Embarrassed to say I repair my decs that get damaged - they are all memories :)
Love to see some of your Polish decorations Sue.

From a pic I took last year,
My Polish baubles are the big silver and green egg-shaped ones with surface decorations of cabochons and glitter patterns. (My big red one is on the other side of the tree, I've only got 3 good Polish ones so far.)
Muzzy is guarding them.  :)

My point was not that they've been made for a long while but rather that M's looked too good to be so old. The colours fades or flakes off and the glue goes yellow

 :)
I did find the big silver one in a charity shop, but it came in its own nice wooden box.
I was dribbling over several beauties when I was in Poland last year, but I wasn't allowed to buy any or bring them home.  >:( Too big and awkward to carry safely.
