Frederic Lewis, Dublin - Registered Designs 140188 & 174479.
« on: January 15, 2017, 12:18:28 PM »
Elsewhere in the Board's 'British & Irish Glass', Fred has indicated that The National Archives hold records for the following additional Registered Designs for Frederic Lewis of Dublin  -  and here is the link back to that first Frederic Lewis Registration that was shown, together with some of the Company history as ferretted out by Fred.......  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,64128.msg359598.html#msg359598  -   it's reply No. 39  ...

RD 140188, registered 24 April 1861 - Parcel 2; pomade bottle; Class 3: glass
RD 142815, registered on 21 August 1861 - Parcel 3; ink bottle; Class 3: glass
RD 174479, registered on 11 May 1864 - Parcel 6; bottle for perfumes or other materials; Class 3: glass.

I'll include Rd. 142815 in my next batch of Designs under the 'Ink Wells' thread, but since Fred has mentioned the other two I thought it might be of interest to add them should anyone be curious as to their shape etc.                  Hardly exciting, and probably rather vague and unlikely to be found I would have thought, and then only assuming they have a legible lozenge.        Anyway, here they are, just for those who want to see everything in life. :)            I've forgotten what 'pomade' is.........    anything like marmalade  ?? ;D

Thank you for showing these, Paul. I will add them to the GMB RD database shortly.

As for pomade - from Wkipedia:
Quote
Pomade (French pommade) is a greasy, waxy, or a water-based substance that is used to style hair. Pomade gives the user's hair a shiny, slick appearance, and does not dry it out. It lasts longer than most hair care products, taking 10 washes to remove. The original pomade of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries consisted mainly of bear fat or lard. Lanolin, beeswax, and petroleum jelly have been used extensively in the manufacture of modern pomades. Stiffening properties of pomades make sculptured hairstyles such as the pompadour or quiff possible; while long lasting moisturizing properties make it popular with individuals with Afro-textured hair.
Perfumed pomades would have been exactly the kind of products manufactured and sold by Frederic Lewis.

Fred.

thanks for that Fred  -  and hence the need for antimacassars on all the chairs   -  definitely nothing to do with marmalade then ;D

In connection with which, I feel the need to add an explanation of my favourite word :) - I always thought it was to do with pomade but having read this it appears it wasn't initially to do with pomade but to do with Macassar oil:

(and yikes ... ten washes to wash out eurggh)
