It could be possible that you are looking for a Tavern or a surname of a Tavern owner in one of the various Newtons ( I don't know how name changes over the years i.e.1700s to 2000s will affect this in that place names may have evolved)

I could only find the history list of Exeter taverns (you need to click on the alphabetically link at the bottom to show the next pages:

but perhaps the owner of that site may be able to assist you in your search?
