Cameo glass small goblets, far East?
« on: February 06, 2017, 09:13:59 AM »
Pair of cameo glass goblets, one red, one amethyst over clear.
Appr. 10 cm tall, rim with smoothely polished edge.

They show on one side a landscape with trees and mountains (identical on both), on the other side a Japanese (?) man on the amethyst one, and a woman draped in long clothes, holding a sword or long stick in her hand, on the red one.
Both have an identical raised mark on the foot, illegible symbols which might well be Japanese (or Chinese) letters; though the lower part looks like "42".

Nicely made, particularly the drapery of the clothes.
And a nice ring to the glass, too.

I wasn't able to find anything remotely similar in my searches, so any help in ID highly appreciated!

Thanks,
Michael

I believe Japanese.
They do make some stunning cameo.  I have a  four/five colour piece sake cup :)  (clear, yellow, orange, red and blue)
I'll try and find a link for you.

I have found a couple of makers.  But it's VERY hard to search for.  If you know Japanese and can write it then it's much more helpful ... I don't unfortunately.
Third photo down there is a shot of a shop display

and there is a blog here with a piece on
http://yuyuryou.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-87.html

I also found some two layer pieces found on Alibaba.  I can't remember how though.

Thank you very much, m!

Your multicolour sake cup is stunning :)

The piece in the last link you gave (Kitaichi Glass?) seems to have an identical foot as my goblets.
So Japanese is very likely, particularly regarding the sujet.

And yes, the quality is nice IMHO, lots of detail just from one colour layer...

I think yours are particularly lovely because they are a true pair.
And gorgeous colours.

Somewhere a long time ago I did find a blog showing how they were made with someone making them.
It's out there somewhere.

As an aside, there is a fab exhibition on at MAK

I'm hoping to be in Vienna later in the year but it will be finished by then unfortunately.

Thanks again m!
Yes, I think my two goblets are really nice. And there is so little (quality) Cameo glass to be found here at affordable prizes...
OT: my only other piece of Cameo glass is a beautiful Kralik 4-colour bowl. I didn't have time yet to take photographs, but I am sure you will be interested to see it.

When you come to Vienna, please give me a short note, it would be lovely to meet for a coffee and chat about glass :)

There is currently another great exhibition at the MAK, http://www.mak.at/glass_of_the_architects. It was in my favourite glass museum before that, Le Stanze del Vetro in Venice.
