1958 World fair expo vase
« on: February 17, 2017, 11:19:00 PM »
Hello. I'm new to this board, but I have pursued glass for the last 30 years. Sometimes I stumble upon something at it an estate sale or flea market such is this piece which I've tried to research for over 7 hours now. I give up.

I know there were some very famous Czech Glass artists at the 58 Expo in Brussels. The closest I can match this style to is a Kralik, but I cannot find one with the sticker.

I doubt this is an heirloom piece, but I'd love to know what it is for sure. I love the color and was struck by it.

Any help is much appreciated. I might have missed something obvious but can't get anywhere with identification...

Best to all, Jeff Williams

Hello Jeff and welcome.

The label is from the Russian pavilion and matches their logo at the Expo.
I'll show you what it looked like and I have the catalogues from the Expo, i'll see if something's mentioned.

This is the logo of the Russian pavilion, i'll need some time to see what I can find, maybe somebody else in the meantime, might recognise this piece.

Thanks Anne. I think Czech was a part of Russia until 1990.

Yes you're right,  i'll have a look if there's anything listed in the catalogue.

I have checked my Russian glass book (produced for Corning exh) and my Ukrainian glass cards and nothing similar.

It might be worth checking out Gus Khrustalny though as there was only a couple of pieces from that period in the book.

Nothing in the catalogues I'm afraid, although they do have some nice images from the Russian pavilion, but I'm sure you didn't come here for that.

Thanks for looking. At least my search bore fruit by bringing me here. I love glass and have a lot to learn.
Where do you find the catalogs? Are they online or free?

It seems like  a Loetz style. He did die in 1958 but I don't know more than that.

Hi Jeff, welcome to the board.
Anne has already found out a lot.
I think you can exclude Czechoslovakia as origin of your vase. They had their own pavillon at the 58 Expo, and the vase doesn't look like glass produced there in the 1950s.
(BTW, Czechoslovakia was never part of the Soviet Union).

Unfortunately, Russian midcentury glass is not very well documented; well, at least not in any language I can read ;)

Kralik and Loetz went out of business well before 1958...

Michael
