Would welcome any suggestions thoughts regarding the signature/markings on this cast glass figure.

The figure appears to have an artists signature followed by the year date of 93 in one corner of the base.  One of the other corners of the base is also engraved with a word possibly  'Cili' or 'Cali' (which may relate to the name of the piece or series) followed by 7/25.

I have looked through lists of current glass artist using this technique although are having trouble matching the style and signature.

The figure measures just under 12cms tall and weighs just under 1kg.

Any suggestions thoughts much appreciated.

Greg

The technique and style are very like a wonderful piece I saw at the Edinburgh conference Frank arranged, it was a student piece, castini uranium glass and it had Danish "Troll" like, wild, coloured hair stuck on, along with a few other odd things.
It was designed to be a warning about legal highs.
It was in the auction to raise funds for the conference, but much as though i was tempted by it, I'd bought other things and didn't. I now regret not digging a bit deeper into my pockets.
The work was done by one of the glass students at Edinburgh College of Art.

A thought I've had is that might Cali be variant on Kali, the god of destruction.
Could the beginning of the signature bit read Belt ......?
It would appear to be numbered 7/25. :)

I can't help with the glass as such but know where you may find an answer.
This is very Tiki, I think a Tiki collector may know of it. Good luck :-)

Thank you both for taking a look  :)

I suppose the signature is equally as likely to be that of a studio than an individual artist.

In terms of the figures inspiration, Tiki is a possibility I will explore further. I have also been pondering whether it may have taken inspiration from either Aztec or even African tribal art/figures.

Cali is also short for California, which is home to a number of tiki artists, major themes cover aztec maori easter island polynesia etc, they all seem to intermingle with tropical settings and cocktails stemming from Don The Beachcombers and Trader Vics. Could just be a red herring though.

And on a completely different tack, just a notion for another suggestion on somewhere, there have been Hugarian artists producing some incredible cast work in the last few years, I was introduced to them by Atilla Sik, of Prismagallery and ArtofAntiques.
He is no longer located in the uk, sadly, but his website is still up and shows lots of lovely glass.

That might be a direction to take a peek.

I think it looks like  a Tiki as well.  Maybe a NZ glass artist?

I've a couple of books with work from around that period and a bit earlier but nothing similar in them Greg, sorry.

It's a nice looking piece and quite detailed. I love the effect of the purple and the black bits in the glass, it's very effective.

If you were feeling brave (or perhaps that's just me as I hate sending emails to people  :) ) you could send an email to Keith Cummings and ask if he is aware of the artist at all?
