Whitefriars / Powell threaded vase?
« on: July 13, 2017, 07:13:12 PM »
Hi, I'm in need of some reassurance, I believe this to be Whitefriars threaded vase, but can't find the shape.
I can not view the catalogues on Whitefriars.com as the website seems to be down.
It measures 8" tall, diameter 6.5" and has the usual ground pontil.

it doesn't look to match any of the W/Fs. colours that I can see  -  it's a very insipid sort of washed out ruby, but not how ruby should look, and it's not near to the ambers either.
The factory did make cog-wheel patterned feet on some other designs, but I don't see any of that pattern on the threaded pieces in Jackson.
Might this have been an experimental piece perhaps?

Where's Nigel when we need him? :)                            How was this piece purchased?

I think the Whitefriars.org site is ok for checking catalogues.

according to Jackson, the full colour range used in threaded pieces (produced until the 1940 catalogue) were  ..................
white threaded on flint  ..............   dark green threaded on sea green  ................ dark amber threaded on gold amber .............  dark blue tinted and threaded on sea green  .......................  dark blue tinted and threaded on sea green ..................   ruby threaded on flint  ..............  and ruby tinted and threaded on flint.
Can't really see from the screen alone, but assume the threading on this piece has in fact been applied separately  -  rather than this being simply a moulded decorative effect.

Where are our W/Fs experts ??

I bought it recently from a local antiques centre, it described or named ,just priced £10 . I recognised the threading from jacksons book so took a chance. I think it's ruby on flint the base was used in other Harry Powell designs, its just shape that's confusing . Here's a ruby on flint pattern 1258 for colour comparison.

That's a lovely example of a 1258 :). Not sure of the original post piece though :/. You can check the cats here.

:) Have you considered Stevens and Williams?
It is hard to tell from images, but I have seen a fair bit of ruby threaded S&W like this, although mostly posy mushrooms, and the threading on the image of the goblet (which is wfs) looks a lot more delicate.
