« on: July 25, 2017, 01:59:35 AM »
Hi,can anyone please give any info on this 24 cms tall by 12 cms diameter vase regarding the button on the base.I did not know that these were put on later pieces.
I will be get to see next week when i visit the UK so hopefully it will survive the journey from the seller.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Perhaps the disc was added to help strengthen the base - if it was particularly thin for example. Maybe worth contacting the current Studio, they might be able to help, their contact page:

It is an unusual feature, but a button would not strengthen a weak base, a button would more likely crack a thin base when it was being applied. Monart wasn't able to put them on their very thin bits.
Did your capslock get stuck? ;)

Hi again John & Sue,
i will get in touch with the studio right away.
I thought i would put the headline in capitals as it is a large vase :)
I write with 1 finger and only realised by the time i had finished and thought sod it,not doing that again.Luckily it wasn`t an whole sentence.
Thanks both again,Paul.

Capitals tend to be interpreted as shouting rather than being indicative of a big bit of glass. ;)  :)

Well it worked well enough when they impressed a flame mark into an applied disk, a process they used for the best part of a decade on their bases. Relative temperatures would be more important for success rather than the thickness of any base.

John said; (I can't do quote boxes)
"Well it worked well enough when they impressed a flame mark into an applied disk, a process they used for the best part of a decade on their bases."

 :-[ ::) That's true!
Monart was made from older, much more brittle metal, not the improved recipes and crystal of later.
Two heads are always better than one, John. Thanks for keeping me right. :)
