Topic: Large orange caterpillar egg shaped thing thought's?

Probably not a wise ebay buy as i thought i was buying an unusual small paperweight until it arrived in a large box.

Hollow with a really rough cut base, it looks like someone has had a go at trying something and it went a bit wrong?.

Could be Chinese and measures 14 inches in height with a diameter of 9 inches.

Any thought's welcome regards Chris.

Just a few vague thoughts.
I like it.
I can see age-related wear on the base, which looks from the pics to be real, so I'm not sure that China could be the origin, given the great leap in quality improvement from there is very recent.

What I have seen, that has some features in common with this, is some of the more unusual and unique bits by Adam Jablonski.
I have a wonderful vase, full of inclusions, (including embedded metal grids) and another sculpture thingy, which has a hollow and polished base like this.

Just tummy-rumbles. I'm not saying it is Jablonski, just that it might be an area to look at.

A technical point which may help in ID ... looking at the irregularity of the white layer at the base where it has been ground out, it appears to have been formed from powdered glass as opposed to a blown overlay.

Interesting piece, Chris. Sue suggesting non Chinese is helpful. I also wonder about English or American studio glass as options.. I like the fact it has wear.... could be a longish road to ID it... hope you get lucky with it.

I can't help, but your description of thinking you'd bought a small paperweight and a 14" tall item turned up made me laugh out loud 

As an aside, I had a Romanian piece with metal on it that had a base cut like that.  It looked as though someone had shorn off a foot or something but I think it was just the way it was left (also came off ebay and was nothing like that which I was expecting to arrive).
