Thomas Webb Bronze Range Vase ?
« on: May 23, 2019, 06:48:36 PM »
Hello,

I recently found this vase thinking it maybe Loetz or Kralik,  but my online research made me think it could be from the Webb Bronze range from the 1880s ?  It's on a green glass ground,  irredescent on the outside with a polished pontil.  Dimpled sides.  No signature though.

7" high and approx 3.5" diameter round the middle.

I can't seem to see exactly this pattern online anywhere though.

Any help appreciated !

Many thanks in advance

Rob

Thanks Keith, looks very similar including the glass thickness,  It's quite thick on my piece.

They are quite thick, neither of mine are signed, the smaller one was guaranteed as being Webb  ;D

My guts think not, but they don't know much.  ;)
It looks too shiney and not really a Webby shape, to them.
(My guts that is. They are communicating with my eyes; I'm only reporting the rumblings.)

I would expect to see a slightly matt, pitted surface on Webb's Bronze.

Got me going now. Rob's second picture does show that 'crazing' effect you get on the surface which you get with Bronze ware, have put two pictures together  showing it, hope you don't mind me copying your image Rob ;D ;D

??? Stuff sitting in my kitchen for too long can look like that - it washes off.
It's the very highly shiney bits that worry me.
Are there very highly shiney bits on yours, Keith?

Not quite so 'oily' but the base looks ok, I did have an oily vase but was not finished as well as Rob's and turned out to be modern Italian. The crackle effect doesn't rub off  ;D

Hello,

Just to clarify the pic I took which shows it to be shiny was in very strong sunlight,  the vase has a more matt effect toward the base and a bit shinier near the top with some "crazing"  I have seen similar designs to this online being offered as webb bronze (with the dimpled body, but they have different necks.

I can also confirm the vase is clean and has had a good wash !  Is there a book that would show all the patterns from this range that is available at all ?

Thanks

Rob

Not aware of such a book, the  book 'Art, Feat and Mystery' about Webb only has one picture of bronzeware and it's one of those 'lumpy' brain' vases, wish I could find such a book  ::) ;D ;D
