Signed Studio Glass Vase - Signature Help required
« on: July 22, 2019, 11:00:50 AM »
Does anyone recognise the signature on this piece please! -

Originally wondered if it may be Phil Atrill but now not too sure.

Also marked with an engraved number that looks like 1499. Could quite conceivably be the date of 1999 I suppose.

Measures 23cm tall.

Applied foot with applied clear glass disc over the pontil mark.

All thoughts appreciated.

Many thanks,
Greg

Not Phil Atrill Greg. I've just compared it to a tall Horizon bottle signature and one on another later red stripey piece. Both ways up. They're not really comparable. None of my pieces have dates or numbers on. Phil Atrill is somebody I have followed since ~2005, when I bought a Distortion vase, (one of his first ones!) at the Scottish Glass Society Exhibition.

The work itself reminds me more of Jane Charles than Phil Atrill, but I don't think that's her signature.
I thought the number might read 1491?

Thanks for checking Sue, much appreciated.  :)

It sure is a tricky one to read!

Looking at the numbers. Its a little hard to see in the photo but the last number is definitely a 9. I suspect its probably the year (1999) with a slightly loosely engraved 9.

Jane Charles has a completely readable and clear signature, so it's not her work.
This is going to bug me. I'll be keeping it in mind.  ;D

I can make it read Claris... something, if the r got mixed a bit with the a and I squint the right way.
I got there by trying to trace out the squiggle with my finger and trying to work out which letters I was shaping. ???
