Topic: Help Information (any) on Whiskey Decanter Set

Hi All,

I'm trying to find information on a decanter set (pictured) Specifically Im looking for country of origin and approximate period - but any information (or opinions) would be appreciated 

- The decanter stands just over 9" tall
- Is Hand Painted
- Has numbered bottle and stopper (looks penned not etched)
- Has slight circular deformation on the base (my camera doesn't pick it up)
- No other identifying marks

As mentioned - any info or opinions appreciated!

Hello Matt and welcome.

I had a quick look at your pictures and my first thought is bohemian/Czech, possibly Borocrystal as they did pieces with the painted crackle effect. 

The base you describe sounds like a polished Pontil Mark, and you should find plenty of images to compare yours to.

I would guess c.1950, but similar styles were made over a long period.  Wear marks on the bottom can be an indicator of age, but some pieces are kept in cabinets so an absence of marks does not necessarily mean something is modern.  If you can identify a maker, it can help narrow down the date.

Czech does sound reasonable, quite a Deco kind of shape to your glasses but that often crept into the 50s.

Also worth searching "Haida" and "Karel Palda".  According to Ivo Haanstra's glass fact file book, Borocrystal was a conglomerate of nationalised glassworks from 1948, until it formed part of Crystalex in 1974.  You could try and identify the glassworks.....ideally by finding a labelled example, or a reference in a book or catalogue, or on a museum website.
