Pink glass vase with thin metal rim and strapping ID please.
« on: August 24, 2019, 08:45:20 PM »
Hello forum,
Can anyone ID this vase please?
It is heavy (528 grams) and has a, somewhat crudely applied, thin metal rim with a cut metal strap going round. Some years ago, I remember reading about a guy who I think was based in London, who created glass vases and bowls etc with metal overlay design on them but I can't remember his name. I think he was active in the 80s. The vase is not signed. As usual, thank you for any help given. It is much appreciated.

Hi, I can’t help with identification but from the photos the metal strapping looks like it is made of lengths of copper tape that have been applied and then soft soldered over the top. The copper tape looks like the type that can be used when making stained glass panels. The tape goes around the edge of the individual glass pieces which are then soft soldered together to make the whole panel. It looks quite amateur to be honest as if you were going to use this technique (to spoil a vase  :) ) you would want to rub down/consolidate the tape better before soldering to get rid of the lumps and creases. Maybe it’s hiding something?

Hi Ekimp,
I agree with you regarding the metal and yes, as I stated, it appears rather crudely applied, rather amateur. The inside of the top the vase can be seen clearly when looking at the inside and there is no damage around the rim or just a little further down...all is perfect. This chap I mentioned  produced wares that were similarly finished. A man I knew, now passed away, had a rather large bowl that had this metal around it...a sort of 'w' design if I remember rightly and that appeared quite amateur in its finish, just like this vase (the glass was good, just the metal decoration was less impressive) It was signed on the base too. He sold it on a certain auction website and it did well, fetching nearly £200. The designers name may have been Peter but I'm not entirely sure.

Good that the glass isn’t damaged, hopefully someone will know of the designer. Meanwhile I’m going to dig out my roll of copper tape and a soldering iron and get listing!

The vase itself looks like Phoenician Glass - or perhaps Mdina. Neither of which would have had metal bits applied when made.  :)
My first thought was; "Is there a chip on the rim being covered up?"

Hello Chopin. Yes, Phoenician glass...I Googled and found several pieces. So, I got the Stanley knife out and set to work...luckily, the metal cam off quite easily. I quite expected to find damage but there isn't any. It is perfect. Quite why someone would go to all that trouble of adding the metal work, I don't know...maybe they were an art or design or metal work student and decided to have a play around. All I need now is someone to xome out with "your vase is by Mr Art Glass (see what I did there lol) and he was based in New York and his work fetches zillions of dollars but...the metal work has to be intact!!! Thanks everyone for your help.

On the other hand it might have been my mother.   ;D
She dug a hole in a Glasform apple. She wanted to stick silver flowers she'd made into it. (It didn't work.)
