Help with Opalescent Hobnail jar identification.
« on: September 27, 2019, 12:49:08 AM »
Hi - I recently found an Opalescent Hobnail jar bottom. I'm not 100% sure it's a jar but it has a makers mark that I can't identify. It's an italic W or M. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not looking to sell my glass... Just find info for my personal enjoyment.
Thanks

Hi - welcome to the GMB.                Hopefully someone here might have more information for you, but I think we would need to see a picture or two - is it possible for you to upload some images?

Assume this is pressed glass, and is it correct that on your side of the pond you usually call some versions of hobnail 'cane' pattern?

The piece is approx. 4.5 inches in diameter at the top including the hobnails and almost 3.75 inches tall. White Hobnail Opalescent with really no absolutely clear glass in it.

thanks - hope someone can help with a maker.            As a quick thought, have you tried Westmoreland - they did have an upper case W as part of their trademarks but am sure it can't be that easy.      Understand this pattern is described as hobnail on your side of the pond - Hocking and Fenton in particular made massive amounts of the stuff in milk glass and opalescent colours, with exactly this type of knobbly pattern, though in Europe the word was reserved for the traditional pattern produced by intersection lines.            On cut and pressed clear glass, a 'nail head' (hexagonal) shape was produced by a series of intersecting mitre lines, and am sure on your side it was often called cane.

Have you tried any of the States glass forums? - they might be able to help.

Hi - No it's not Westmoreland as the mark doesn't match any of their marks. I've looked through many forums and thought I'd ask in this identification forum. I've never asked for help before but this has me stumped.

asking is welcome and never a problem :) :)  -  it's the answers we have problems with - perhaps more so with glass from your side of the pond.
Fingers crossed someone will yet come in with an identification. :)
