Flashy modern lead crystal claret jug - any info?
« on: October 27, 2019, 07:47:34 AM »

 Hi,
Would welcome your thoughts on this one.

It’s modern and perhaps looks as if it’s been made in the style of the American Brilliant Period ?
Are these Hobstars and Brunswick Stars I can see—or is it all fake, fake, fake   ;D

Made of crystal clear, flawless lead glass.

Ht. 38cm ( 15” )
Wt. 1725gm ( 3lb plus )

Many thanks for looking  :)

Scott

Hi,
It looks very like it  :D —it’s funny but I really like its style now - suddenly it doesn’t look at all flashy  ;D
Thanks for your reply Legsy.

my two pennyworth would also suggest modern Czech. and agree it does look like Queens Lace.            I've seen similar cutting on many pieces in charity shops over the years, and always give then a miss - not sure I've ever seen a genuine piece of ABP - perhaps it only turns up in the States.       If I though something was ABP I'd buy it like a shot  -  and if there's something good in the way of U.K. cut glass I buy that, but these things can be attractive, so why they don't have the same appeal I'm not sure  -  probably it's an age thing.

I dug out Jane Spillman's book 'The American Cut Glass Industry  - T.G. Hawkes and his Competitors' - 1996 from the Corning museum - expecting to find that Queen's Lace was an ABP pattern from the first decade of the C20 - but lo and behold the name is absent from the index.        There's a Queen's pattern, a Queen Anne pattern and a Lace Hobnail  -  so not sure really about the origin of the name Queen's Lace , and just to confuse matters there's a modern 'Queen Lace Crystal' used for engraving, not cutting.

I'm a big fan of cut pieces  -  perhaps someone else can offer information on the origin of Queen's Lace.

 Hi Paul,
This one was an impulse buy from a charity shop- I’ve had it several weeks now.
Anyway it now sits very comfortably amongst my other cut glass decanters/jugs - which I suppose means that I’ve got used to it  ::) It’s certainly very different ................

I have to admit that I’d never heard of Queen Lace before Legsy mentioned it.
I’m not saying I’m going to collect it, however if I saw another decanter/jug like this one I’d probably buy it.
Like you if I saw anything that looked like an ABP piece I’d be at the till in a flash  :o
I wonder if that’s what people will be saying about Queen Lace glass in say 150 years time?  ;D

Thanks for searching for the patterns —I can’t understand why cut glass is so undervalued.

Scott

my sentiments exactly :)  -  cut glass has always been a minority interest here - it must be the lack of colour ;D -  plus there's a lack of good books on this side of the pond.

Like Paul, my default for this type of cutting is Czech, especially as I have a labelled bowl which (from memory as it's still in one of the boxes I'm working through) I think has the same pattern cutting.  That said, the panel cut neck and the 24 point cut base give me pause.  Could we see the handle in a bit more detail?  Are there any numbers on the stopper and carafe?  Nice piece.

Sorry Cat, but I just laughed. You are always working through boxes, did you buy a glass museum or did you move?
It is always like having treasure boxes in the garage :D :D
I want such boxes as well ;)

Yes, Monika, I moved from a big three bed house into a modest two bed flat, and I will have another move into an even smaller home in a year or so - when this one gets knocked down for redevelopment.  I have nearly 50 years of collecting and am currently working through it all, which is very hard as I mostly only bought things I really loved.  I always thought I would have more time to research pieces, now I have to accept that's just not the case.  So yes, a garage full of boxes, and a living room absolutely covered in the pieces I have unpacked so far.  It's both fun and depressing at the same time, which is a very strange situation to be in, but the GMB helps keep me what currently passes for sane!

 Hi Cat,
Here’s a photo of its handle- the best I can do.
Couldn’t see any numbers.

I really appreciate your interest and help.  :)
Many thanks

Scott
