Not sure if Whitefriars?
« on: November 07, 2019, 12:20:30 PM »
Hi,

I have acquired 2 pieces, one was thought to be Whitefriars (bubble type texture on 2 sides) and the other is unknown. Neither have any makers marks etc, so unsure if either are Whitefriars. Also, I have seen some Scandinavian vases that seem similar to these, so really confused as to where to start with ID for both.

They are both quite weighty, the bubbled textured one is 17.5cm tall and 4.25cm wide, the other is the heavier of the two and is 17cm tall and 4.75cm wide.

I hope the photos help to ID them? The 1st of obviously of both, the next 3 are of the smooth textured vase.

Many thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi  -  sorry to disappoint, but am fairly sure neither of these is W/Fs.  -   think you mean bark texture, rather than bubble texture. :)
Am sure that the textured surface example is one of the non-W/Fs look-a-likes used by Emmi Smith on her blog.      Have you looked?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the response. I would say it is more rippled/bubbly effect rather than the bark shown on her blog. I have tried doing another photo if that helps. Plus, it is only down 2 sides, the other sides being smooth. The auctioneer described the textured vase as by Baxter for Whitefriars... looking likely not then?

So, I'm at a bit of a loss now - are they more likely to be Scandinavian?

Any input would be great. Such a shame no makers marks etc!

Yes that one is Whitefriars, collectors call this design a nailhead vase, colour is Indigo, pattern number 9683.

The grey vase might be from Murano, emphasis on might...

John

I had to do a double take Paul and check my records, the texture does not seem as well defined as some examples, may just be down to the light in Jagtype's photos.

Hi Glassobsessed,

Many thanks for your response. Your knowledgeable answer is really appreciated! Apologies for the lack of light in the first photos! Is the lack of definition making you think it might not be Whitefriars?

Paul S. - no problem. Thanks for your input.

Best thing I can do is quote myself. ;)

I would definitely look at Mandruzzato for the grey vase if you haven't already. I think you'll find your attribution
