Possibly a very old glass for your views please???
« on: December 07, 2019, 02:26:40 PM »
 :o
Today found this glass which appears to be an old one but its well outside of
my knowledge to be able to tell for sure would like other opinions please as
it has all the hallmarks of an early one or am i wrong???? Measures 7" approx
has lots of wear from moving on surfaces and rings really nicely. Under a strong
loop the bowl has lots of detailed patterns at the base area etc... Thanks for taking
a peek  :)

would like to think we take more than a peek here  ;)  -   do you have the time to list the hallmarks to which you refer, and since 'old' can mean all things to all people, then what sort of age are you suggesting in this instance?
Being practical, and since you have the glass in your hands, it makes more sense that you list the features of your piece rather than see if we can guess just by peering at the screen.

Please don't take this as dismissive criticism  -   we often unknowingly help ourselves if we speak openly about those features that 'suggest' antiquity  -  another suggestion is not to litter your post with negative comments  -  other folk will be quick enough to do that for you if your assumptions are indeed wrong  -  be positive with your thoughts.            Alternatively, you might take a leaf out of a certain lady's book - for whom I have the greatest respect - and say ………..  "I could be wrong, but ……………" ;)           No false modesty either  -  leave that to others ;D

Look forward to more information.

That "quilted" texture on the body is very similar to one I have seen used on Webb's Alexandrite glass. Christine calls it "honeycomb".

bowls with 'honeycomb' decoration (moulded) start life c. 1730, and the date given for most of the Alexandrite material is usually c. 1900.

It doesn't of course follow that the piece here has necessarily any connection with either of those dates - I suspect tha moulded honeycomb decoration has occurred on many bowls on unrelated dates.

I’m wondering if it may be an 18th century German glass with that type of domed foot?,hopefully someone with more of a clue will pop up later,is it leaded?

More questions for you :)
It looks like the rim maybe a larger diameter than the foot, is that the case or is it distortion from the camera?

 ;)
Thank you Paul i love your long messages :)
Sorry i have been a little slipshod i have my daughter over
for the weekend but couldn't resist listing this glass as it got
my juices pumping when i purchased it :) i have very little original
glass of this type in books or the real thing to compare it with but going
off my millers book by Jeanette Hayhurst it appeared to be a mid 18th century
Newcastle type baluster, Sadly the day is done so i will reply with a better picture
Sunday if Summer gives me chance :) My initial feelings going off a Continental Kit-Kat
glass in my collection is good :) It rings Really well when flicked so hoping Lead crystal and English mid 18th however i
am aware some great reproduction's have been manufactured by Powell Stevens & Williams
and other's i just have very little literature myself but i guess it is the type of thing i would need to take to say Fielding auction house so the serious type of collector might inspect the metal in the hand :) I honestly don't know a great deal :(
Will reply better sooner than later :)

HI , this to me looks like a mid 18th c Composite Stem wine glass, almost certainly lead glass and English, though Scandinavia is not impossible.

cheers

Peter.
