Topic: Large moulded drinking glass, help please.

5.5 inches tall, 3 part mould, lots of wear and what looks like a small polished pontil mark. Scratched round the rim is.... White Hart, Alphington, the only Alphington I can find is in Essex where there is a White Hart Hotel.

What sort of help is it that you need Keith  -  it dates to c. 1870 - it's mould made as you know - one of thousands made no doubt - and sadly unlikely you will find the maker.

Always an outside chance it could be Sowerby - do you have the CD Rom catalogues?  -  don't think it's one of the Derbyshire patterns.            Unfortunately, goblets were made in profusion - we need someone to recognize this particular pressed pattern.           But they're a good area to collect and not expensive.

Keith - just had a look through my own pix of the goblets it did have, but couldn't see this one.          The Kew archives show a few designs that were Registered  -  I don't hold out a lot of hope in seeing this particular pattern since presumably yours doesn't have a Rd. No. or lozenge  -  but will look for you in the next 48 hours.          Goblets don't occur prolifically in the BoT records  -  suppose they didn't think them worth Registering.

I bet the top rim is nearly as worn as the foot, from being stored upside down on the shelf, nice. I’ve not been lucky enough to find one of these types with the pub name, I think it’s more common with pewter mugs where you usually get the landlord’s name as well.

John - I think they're all a bunch of 'lushes' up Keith's way   -  I'm on a dry January, so the d.ts. are starting to bite and I'd rather not discuss booze with anyone  

Don't know about the frequency of inscriptions on pewter tankards, but such things are uncommon on glass goblets judging by the very few I did find, but Keith is lucky to have this one  -  it lifts the interest value enormously, though having just the pub name is unusual  -  inscriptions will often include a persons name and perhaps their age or sometimes a birth date.          The down side is that being commonplace and utility items they don't usually come with provenance or attribution.          I have looked through my Kew pix and don't see this exact pattern.    I've not looked, but do we have a goblets section on the Board's archive?   -   if not then in the coming days I'll try and up-load pix of my Kew pieces that are Registered items.

Ekimp, yes well worn round the rim, I do have a pewter mug from a now extinct pub called the Unicorn in Notting Hill, will check the location again, I do make mistakes, sometimes

The odds of getting an ID on an unregistered goblet are virtually zero. Designs were common across glass houses, you could easily have 10 that made that particular pattern.  Manchester was prominent in pressed goblets / tumblers etc from roughly 1850 to 1875

yes, that probably sums it up.                     I assume they were for beer/ale of some kind, perhaps beer was stronger then.
