Topic: Uranium glass vase

Can anyone identify the attached. Family history suggests 1930’s as wedding gift at that time.

I can't find the exact item but I've seen the elongated octagonal panels on vases from the Czechoslovakian Libochovice factory. Similar panels make up the Sowerby 'Oxford' pattern although these are usually more regular with equilateral octagons. Both these patterns date back to late 20s or early thirties.

I've tried Pamela Wessendorf's museum pix but wasn't aware of seeing it there.            Will try the Czech CD rom catalogues tomorrow if I get the time.

So far I've looked at the Sklo Union (Czech.) catalogues for Hermanova and Libochovice factories and this pattern doesn't seem to be there - will try some of the others later today perhaps.
As can be imagined, over the past century, or more, vases were possibly the most common of all glass designs/shapes, and finding an exact match can take much time, and occasionally an item remains stubbornly without any id.
Assume in view of your comments about uranium, you've tested this one with the u.v. torch, Andrew?

As already requested, please advise how tall this particular vase is - won't give us an id, but as always it will of interest and possibly of future help.    Some guide as to size/dimension of the item is always preferred.    thanks - and rather belatedly, welcome to the GMB

Thanks for the information so far.  Height is approximately 20 cm and yes definitely fluorescent uranium glass.

I looked in the Sklo Union Database for vases of around 20cm height but sorry to report that I didn't find it.  It sounds like Paul S also looked there.

the Czechoslovakian names I haven't yet tried - from the list - are ……………..    Nemsova, Rosice and Rudolfova   ……………….  not suggesting it is one of these, but always worth a look - are you saying Anne Marie that you have looked at the full list of makers showing on the CD Rom?

This doesn't have to be Czech. of course, could be from another Continental country  -  have a look at Pamela's full country list for pressed glass - glas-musterbuch.de  -  there are a lot of possibilities as you will see  -  you will need a lot of time to search them all. 

I would be more inclined to look for the pattern, rather than just vases of 20 cms. height.

I whittled down the number of possibles in the CD rom data base by the height of 20cm give or take 5%.  That would cover different makers, but if there's an entry of the same pattern with a different height it wouldn't pick it up.  I just don't think I can look through every vase in the database - using the height gives a short list as I tend to get boggled after a few pages of little vase images!

I also looked in the before 1958 catalogues for Nemsova, Rosice and Rudolfova Hut catalogues without success.

It isn't necessarily Czech but I can see why you were looking in that direction.

have to admit that it was John's suggestion of Czechoslvakia that got me going in that direction, but I do agree that Pamela's 'musterbuch' site  -  whilst essential viewing for pieces such as this  -  can be a headache and Disprin job.
I've run out of ideas really for this vase  -  so regret unable to help Andrew any more  -  some pieces do ultimately defy an id, unfortunately.
Similar pieces have a reasonably good chance of being Czech., and that would be my first port of call anyway  - just not this one I don't think.
