sometimes described as rock crystal glass, though it's vastly different to the c. 1880s stuff from the likes of Fritsche, Woodall and Kny, but it has that watery appearance which may suggest imitation of the natural crystal. Wheel engraved pieces - in this 'bright polished' effect - by Jack Lloyd and others - c. 1920s to 1940s - are posted here occasionally, and though I did have a signed piece by Lloyd, I'm going to suggest that this bowl is not by him, despite some similarities, and the rather obvious fact this this one isn't signed - I've spent ages looking for a signature, but can't find anything.
Not easy to photograph - because of the watery bright appearance - so forgive the naff pix, but you get the idea, I hope.
My opinion is that Lloyd's pieces don't share these Paisley type scroll/curves, which appear as the main engraved theme, and the daisy flowers that Lloyd produced I'm sure are smaller than the flowers here.
Not quite sure about the bunches of what appear to be grapes - I don't see any vine leaves in the decoration.
The festoon and double lined circle occupy the pontil location - not something you see often, and the engraving really does have a watery appearance, just like the natural crystal. Assumed it would be lead glass, but only gives a dull ish thud when flicked.
Diameter is about 6" - height about 3.5 inches
The engraving is high quality, and the detail to the flowers is quite remarkable - am assuming whoever produced this one was very skilled.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to the engraver or glass house that might have produced this bowl - or perhaps a more accurate age
