Kilner jar age please
« on: March 17, 2020, 09:42:11 PM »
Hi all!
I have recently moved into a house built in the grounds of an old hospital  in Rochdale u.k that was a workhouse before that. Just outside the grounds is an area used as a dumping ground. This area has interested me and whilst walking my dog I found a jar possibly a A Kilner jar?
could anyone date it and give me any more information on what it may have been used for?
marking are... K B ld C
                             SD
                            657
                               2

Thanks in anticipation.

hi - welcome to the GMB.            must admit the marks you mention mean nothing to me, but might of course to others, though I think just out of interest if nothing else people will want to see a picture of your jar please, though appreciate everyone probably knows what a Kilner jar looks like.

I seem to recall that we've had chats on Kilner jars some time in the past though unfortunately I now can't find them  -  perhaps one of the Mods. will be able to add a link for you.

Have you tried any of the bottle forums - always possible they will have useful information.

The first bit should possibly mean "KB Ltd. Company".
I know the C looks like a G, but that doesn't make sense. It's more likely to be an artifact of manufacturing in the mould used.

Thanks for the reply, I agree the c could look like a g.
I believe the C denotes the factory it was manufactured....Conisboro' or Conisbrough
The large SD is a bit of a puzzle though?!
What is also puzzling is the lack of quality in what as thought of as a decent jar of the time.
I have enquired at Ravenhead who own Kilner
, their response was frustrating to say the least. They dont have records prior to their purchase in.....2000.
The quest continues.
