Hello glass message board.

This is the first time using this site again for many years, I remember setting up an account with my dad years ago. Through the wonders of Carboot’s, charity shops and the usual and my old mans help I’ve learnt a few things, collected a few pieces, sold a few and more importantly grown a love for glass for many years! I’ll be honest I’ve been submerged in a world of google and eBay for years and glass message board slipped my mind. So I’m glad to be back.

This piece has me stumped though..... I bought it a while back and it’s sat on my bookcase for a few months now driving me potty. Sorry photos aren’t great but I just wanted to take a couple pictures and get this uploaded before I forgot and end up staring at it on the bookcase for even longer.
Any info, clues or a definite identification would be great.

It has a Capital letter “B” sandblasted on the base, it’s the width of a standard mug and half the height of one roughly.( no ruler to hand again sorry)

Thanks Nathan Smith

I can't see the mark very clearly, but from what I can see, I just wonder if it is Dartington Crystal - acid-etched mark 1966-80s?  Shown here, top left hand side.

Hello, unfortunately I cant upload a clearer image as the size of the file is too large to upload.
Any suggestions to get round that?

Thanks for the thought of Dartington, but I don’t think it is as the mark on the base of this is a Clear “B” and does not have an outline to the mark and also does not resemble a D/B if you know what I mean.

I did think about it being farting but have investigated their marks throughly.

Anyone else out there with a clue to who it is?

Thanks though. 🙂

nope - sorry, no idea, though I did think Anne's suggestion good, but obviously it wasn't Dartington.

The issue with difficulties uploading your pix, is that the GMB maximum file size is smaller than many other sites ………………..   the first dimension must not exceed 700, so …………..   using something like IrfanView or similar to resize, you will have to adjust your pix to fit the Board's limit of 700 for the first dimension, then upload.               There are instructions here to help with this particular problem  -  try this link ………...  https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,34093.0.html
You can, of course, use a supplementary lens between the camera and the backstamp, which will magnify the mark  -  this should enable the mark to be seen a lot clearer and larger.                Are you really sure the backstamp is sandblasted  -  rarely are backstamps sandblasted  -  usually they are created by some form of acid application.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Sorry it is acid etched onto the base and not sandblasted.

I will look into trying to upload a photo clearer. The thing is I’m using my phone for this and don’t have a PC at home to use so all my work is being carried out on my phone but I will try and resize or even possible.

Thanks Paul

another option is that you send full size pix - as an attachment to a pm, to Anne (Mod.), who will then resize and post.

Have to say I have never used a mobile to create and send pix  - I probably wouldn't know how to - and there's no doubt that a camera is the best option for taking quality pix.              Like anything, the lengths we go to depends on the desire for the quality of the end result  -  I've only ever used an inexpensive compact, but using the supplementary lens and some jigging around with the light, can get some worthwhile pix for very little outlay  -  see the attached.

Remember to avoid busy backgrounds - plain dark colours, black or grey are best - and try to rake the light across the subject - it helps to keep glare to a minimum.
Best of luck.

Hi again Paul,

Thanks for the detailed response, I keep looking at the mark on the base again and again.
I’m going to try and take couple good shots and send them over to one of the moderators and ask them nicely to resize and add to this thread.

Really appreciate the help so far.

Thanks

You should find help here to post images.
But don't ask me about anything to do with mobile phones.  ;D

makes me think of one of those chunky candle holders, but it may well be something else entirely.                   I don't know that the mark itself is any more clear - though there's no doubt we can see the whole piece much better.
External hosts - as a source for pix - aren't the most favourite GMB method of posting images  -  although it's not something I've ever used, apparently the down side is that the life of the pix are dependent on the life of the host - whereas pix posted direct to the Board should be available indefinitely.

You might try yet again please  -  rub a little talc or carbon paper over the mark to give some contrast - it might increase the visibility.

I thought the mitres might have been cut, but going to stick head on block and suggest this piece is moulded  ….    reason is that the scratches within the mitres appear to run at right angles to the length of the mitre, whereas if cut they would run the opposite way.
