Uranium Glass Wine Glasses
« on: May 16, 2020, 11:53:29 AM »
This is a pair of I think Victorian wine glasses. They are made in three not particularly well finished parts with lots of faults and are a bit wonky. Size is 125mm. tall and the bowls and feet are 65mm. across. The feet have the distinctive "T" shear marks and show a bit of wear but no chips. The bowls have both horizontal striations and vertical tool marks. The glass itself does have a faint Georgian glass grey tinge but putting everything together I think they are Victorian.

so that narrows it down then  ………………………  anywhere from 1837 to 1901  ;D ;)      only joking Nev.                  In fact I like them, but would suggest possibly not wine glasses in view of the short rather chunky stems …………   but nothing Georgian about them  -  uranium in glasses didn't start commercially until c. 1840.
My suggestion for date would be last third of C19, but impossible really to pin these things down  -  Lustrousstone may have a better idea as to dating based on the colour.
Use wise, these might be for port possibly or toddy, but they have the appearance of a tavern glass maybe.

Let's see what others think as to use and date. :)

Thanks Paul, I wasn't sure about the exact date but I think I read somewhere, I can't remember where, that the "T" shear mark mostly appeared around 1870-1900. so you'd be right about the date.

Searching "collecting antique glass(es)" on YouTube there are three very interesting posts by a gentleman in Australia dealing with identifying glasses from 1800-1900. His information seems pretty genuine but with the usual proviso that everything is not always as it seems. He places the "T" mark between 1860-1880 but maybe as late as 1900.
